One
of the greatest challenges of L2 learner, is the ability and confidence to
speak in a language other than their L1. However there are a lot of strategies
and techniques that could be used to make them speak no matter what.
Firstly, a teacher can easily get students
talking by introducing themselves, and describing one or two things about
themselves. For instance, I can start by using five adjectives to describe
myself and they can also take turn to do the same.
Also
by allowing students, to speak on topics, they are familiar with, everyone can
easily speak on a topic they know a lot about, we all find it easy to recall
amazing stories in our life, you can ask them to speak about “A Day I Will
Never Forget Easily”. Although they might make errors while talking but focus
less on that and pay attention to the fact that they are speaking.
The Students should be provided
with cues, teacher should ensure that the students are provided with mind map
or life map, this will help them to be open to ideas on what to speak on.
The teacher can also role-play and
allow the students to mimic the level of fluency and encourage them even when
they don’t get it right.
In
addition, teacher can engage the students with activities such as, debate,
interview, chess game, all these will encourage the students to pipe up in the
class.
In conclusion it is expected than a
teacher who wants to encourage students
to speak must be patient and friendly, this will make the students to feel at
ease and communicate with confidence.
